Apple released iOS 4.0.2 for the iPhone and iPod touch, and iOS 3.2.2 for the iPad on Wednesday, effectively closing the PDF flaw which allowed hackers access to the internal code of those devices. The exploit was central to the jailbreakme.com hack released earlier this month. According to release notes with the updates, the PDF fix is the only change made to the code of the OS.

The jailbreak also made it possible for the iPhone Dev Team to release a version of its ultrasn0w carrier unlock for the iPhone 4 for the first time, which it did two days after the release of jailbreakme.com.

The Cupertino company said shortly after the jailbreak that it was aware of the issue and would be releasing a fix. It is not clear what the Dev Team’s next move would be, considering anyone who updates would now be unable to use the site.

“Comex,” the developer behind jailbreakme.com, only said as part of a tweet late Tuesday that “[I] guess I need to get working on the next jailbreak,” likely in reference to the anticipation that Apple was about to update iOS, which it did indeed do.

Users wishing to update to the new software would be able to do so by connecting their iOS device to iTunes, and clicking “Check for Update.” Similarly, those who may be in line for an automated weekly check for updates may start being prompted to upgrade beginning today.

It appears that those who have jailbroken before the fix would still remain jailbroken, although that has not yet been independently confirmed.

Yesterday evening, Apple rolled out the 10.6.2 update to its Snow Leopard operating system, which concentrated mostly on general bug fixes and stability issues as well as some issues in Mail, MobileMe and Safari. In all, there are more than a hundred improvements, and more than 40 security related fixes.

But the big talk today is that this update officially terminates support for Intel’s Atom processor family. These low cost, low power processors have become the standard in many nettops, netbooks, MIDs, and ultraportables, and Apple has made a concerted effort to stay out of the way of most of these device categories.

Because Apple has not created a netbook, for example, OS X users could install the operating system on their unsupported netbooks and create what is affectionately referred to as a “Hackintosh.” Atom-based machines from Asus, MSI, Dell, and HP have all been successfully converted into Hackintoshes with varying degrees of usability.

Users running Snow Leopard on their Atom-based netbooks however, are now reporting widespread failure when attempting to install the 10.6.2 update. A development build of the update reportedly killed Atom support, but the blogger who discovered this fact later retracted his statement as speculation “until the final version of 10.6.2 is out.”

Well, that blogger today has declared Atom officially unsupported.

While only a small contingent of users have turned their devices into Hackintoshes, Apple’s blockage of Intel’s netbook-specific platform is symptomatic of a larger distaste for the form factor.

Microsoft, for example, has gone back and forth with its promotion of netbooks, trying to keep on top of the category with “lite” or legacy versions of Windows while simultaneously preventing it from cannibalizing the market for the current, full versions of Windows.

According to online shopping site Retrevo, Windows 7 Starter Edition (which was found in 23 of 28 new netbooks) actually lacks many features standard in Windows XP. The site asked 1,100 of its users if they were aware that Windows 7 Starter Edition lacked multi-monitor support, desktop personalization, and DVD playback, and 61% said they were not. Unsurprisingly, this made those same users reconsider Windows 7 Starter Edition as a positive quality of a new netbook.

While the survey was more than a little loaded to generate a negative response, the point remains that our big OS makers still can’t figure out how to deliver a product to the netbook market that won’t be detrimental to their bottom line.

Apple has finally released Mac OS X 10.6.2, the latest version of its Snow Leopard operating system, and be prepared for a massive update for your Mac: 473MB. There’s a lot of stuff in here, and among other things, it includes a fix for the guest account data loss bug.

Archeopteryx writes “According to Wired’s ‘Gadget Lab’ blog, Snow Leopard’s next update, OS X 10.6.2, will block the Atom processor and will disable many ‘Hackintosh’ netbooks. It is indeed true that OS X will run just fine on some netbooks if you install the right drivers and ktexts, but Apple’s EULA has always specified that the license was applicable only to Apple hardware. There have always been processor types specified in OS X and that have to be worked around now for those who want to use an Atom or similar non-Apple-adopted processor, so this is likely no more than a hiccup on the road for the OSX86 crowd. But, it raises the question: is it time for Apple to sell a license for non-Apple hardware — priced accordingly of course — for those people who want OS X on platform types Apple has not yet adopted, like the netbook? The only reason OS X is not on my Eee is that I want to comply with the licensing terms. I could just pay for a license to use it.”

Anyone who hangs around on websites with information about installing Mac OS X on non-Apple labelled computers has probably already encountered this report, but it’s newsworthy anyway. The upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.6.2 will remove support for the Intel Atom line of processors from Mac OS X.

bonch writes “Contrary to previous reports, Atom chip support is working fine in the latest 10C535 build of OS X 10.6.2. Apple’s EULA still states that OS X is licensed to run only on Apple hardware, but it looks like OSX86 hackers can breathe easy … for now.”

patentpundit writes “On April 18, 2008, Apple Computer applied for a patent relating to an ‘invention’ that allows for showing advertisements within an operating system. The first named inventor on the patent application is none other than Steve Jobs. The patent application published and became available for public inspection on October 22, 2009. If implemented, the invention would make it possible for advertisements to be displayed on a variety of devices, including desktop computers, cell phones, PDAs, and more. In one alarming aspect, the device could be disabled while the advertisements run, thereby forcing users to let the advertisement run its course before the system would unlock and allow further use. In an even more invasive scenario, explained in the patent application, the user could be required to do something, such as click to continue, in order to verify that they are actively watching the advertisement and haven’t simply walked away while the ad runs. Whether Apple would implement such an invention is unknown, but it is possible that they think there are others out there who might want to implement such invasive advertising. It is possible Apple wanted to get ahead of the curve and file this patent so that if any company is silly enough to engage in Big Brother advertising, then Apple will get a royalty. I sure hope this is not the future of advertising.”

The mailing list and repository will also be removed shortly.’ Apple originally touted ZFS as a feature that would be available in Snow Leopard Server. A few months before release, all mention of ZFS was removed from the Apple web site and literature, and ZFS was notably absent from Snow Leopard Server at launch. Despite repeated attempts to get clarification about their plans from ZFS, Apple has not made any official statement regarding the matter. A zfs-macos Google group has been set up for members of Apple’s zfs-discuss mailing list to migrate to, as many people had started using the unfinished ZFS port already. The call is out for developers who can continue the forked project.” Daring Fireball suggests that Apple’s decision could have been motivated by NetApp’s patent lawsuit over ZFS.

Apple has stated on its website that will add support for Windows 7 to Boot Camp later this year. “Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.”
